If someone asks you to tell them what you really think, does that mean they know the information they hear is normally filtered?

Likely. That's another reason people should hire honest people.

If you are fortunate enough to work with people that tell you what they really think consider yourself blessed.  However unfiltered communication doesn't give people the right to be mean. There is a right way and wrong one to share your thoughts.
