By fourth grade children are aware of what their neighbor is reading. Struggling readers will hold a book they can't read just so they will look the part. Meanwhile, that neighbor continues to improve, and the others join the 87%. It's worse in middle school...and likely beyond.
This is where ereaders might make a difference, unless you're only giving them to a few. Let's allow all kids to hold a book they can read instead of a symbol of what we want them to be.
